This is a result of conversations the AIMA Outreach Committee has had within the group, as well as our interaction with students and parents at both Arundel Middle and Crofton Middle Schools. What this section hopes to accomplish is try and prepare our middle school musicians for life as a high school musician and ease the transition from middle school to high school.
From the beginning, we've had our middle school musicians involved at Arundel. Many performed with the Marching Wildcats at Carroll Field and in Tournament of Bands competition. This past spring, we held a successful Side-by-Side night at Arundel High School with our two middle schools and our elementary school programs. The middle school students had a chance to perform with high schoolers as a repeat of the successful 2007-2008 Spring Side-by-Side concert. We held an orientation briefing at Arundel High School with parents, students and faculty on the music program to parents and eighth graders. We even went on the road with at the Crofton and Arundel middle school concerts.
During that time, we heard many concerns from parents and kids. These concerns include:
1) a phobia about marching band and their ability to march 2) expenses involved in high school band (travel, participation) 3) academic impact on freshman participating in band programs 4) fear about upperclassmen musicians 5) avenues and eligibility of participation in programs 6) after-school rehearsals 7) scheduling music into academic schedule 8) music vs. athletics 9) parental involvement
This is a place where the AHS Music Faculty and staff, as well as members of AIMA can address questions about the program, AIMA support and the activities we inundate ourselves with from band camp to graduation. If you have questions regarding the move of musicians from middle to high school, or if your a middle school parent wanting your kids to perform with the high school band after school, here's the chance to ask.
By using the forum, many of Q&As you may have will benefit middle schoolers and incoming freshman who may have the same questions. However, if you want to ask your questions privately, you may e-mail your questions to one of the following and we'll try to get you your answer:
Dr. Phill Butts, pbutts@aacps.org (Director of Music) Melissa McCubbin, mccubbm@aol.com (Color Guard) Andy Musliner, amusliner@yahoo.com (AIMA President) Denise McHarg, denise_mch@yahoo.com (AIMA Outreach Chair)
This is a great musical program, but it also needs to keep the students coming up from middle school programs and it needs active parental participation to succeed. If you have questions, please ask them.
