The AACC Community Jazz Band kicks off the fall semester on Wednesday, August 26 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Cade Center on the AACC Campus. Details on registration for the non-credit course are posted below:
MUS-386 Community Jazz Ensemble 0.0 ceu hours
Community Jazz Ensemble Learn and perform jazz stage band music. Open to all qualified community musicians. Audition may be required. Programs are prepared by the college for public performance. $40+ includes $30 supplies/lab fee. Note: Performance dates to be announced in class.
Traditionally, Arundel High School students who perform jazz are way too busy with the marching band season to perform with the fall group. However, they are not excluded and are welcome to participate once marching season ends.
Questions about AHS students participating in the AACC Jazz Band can be directed to AACC Jazz Band director Marty Knepp (AHS Class of 1981) at marty@knepptunes.com.

Just as a reminder...the AACC jazz Band rehearsals resume Wednesday night. The band, led by former Arundel student Marty Knepp, always has a high number of AHS students, Arundel band parents, and alumni attending at AACC or other local colleges.
Rehearsals go from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Cade Center on the AACC Arnold Campus. AHS students are welcomed during the semester, provided they can work this into their marching band and homework schedule.

Nice start to the 2009 Fall Semester at the AACC Jazz Band in Arnold. Co-leaders Marty Knepp and Ray Ascione met and directed a very large group of musicians tonight. Some new faces, some returning faces following a quiet summer, and a bunch of the same core group that makes this band a lot of fun.
Rhythm section had three guitarists, three bass players, a quartet of drummers and thought I saw four pianists tonight. Five trumpets, five trombones and 10 saxophones -- so many that Marty was looking to break up rehearsals into sax section 1 and 2 -- and have split ensemble sessions.
It was a shorter night than normal, but we did go through five charts to get the band back into a rhythm after many had taken the summer off. We opened with "Meet the Flintstones" -- the theme to the popular Hanna-Barbara cartoon series. We followed that with an attempt to play "Parading Down South Rampart Street," a chart that had a majority of the band struggling a bit -- prompting Ray to halt the performance for now. We finished the opening segment with "All the Things You Are" -- another sight read.
After the break, Marty decided on reading one chart called "A Little Minor Booze" that we had had in the folder for a few semesters, but had not performed in the last few outings. We closed the night with "The Count is In" which we played at the college's "Celebration of the Arts" event in early summer, and worked on all through the summer session.
As far as the concert, it is slated for December 12 at 7 p.m. in the Pascal Center for the Performing Arts in Arnold, beginning at 8 p.m. More details on the show will be announced through the semester.
As is traditional with the column, we let the AIMA membership know who from Arundel are performing with AACC. In addition to Marty (AHS 1981), we also had Corey Grove (AHS 2008) on trumpet, Mitch Wightman (AHS 1975) and Joey Wightman (AHS 2005) on trombone, Sarah Wightman (AHS Class of 2009) on baritone saxophone, and me (dad of two AHS Class of 2006 grads) on trumpet. We may see more Arundel students show up for jazz band rehearsal at AACC - pending completion of the AHS Marching Season in November.

The following Anne Arundel Community College Jazz Band Members have ties to the Arundel High School Music Program. I expect this list to grow as the fall marching season ends and more AHS jazz musicians head to Arnold to get some extra jazz band time.

Big crowd again tonight at Cade for rehearsal tonight, where the band concentrated heavily on about five charts and worked from 7 until 9:50 p.m. Ray and Marty got their full time out of us tonight as they took the time to work to strengthen some soft areas and smooth out the rough spots on the music we reviewed.
We sight read three charts tonight. After Ray worked on "The Count is In" as our traditional opener, Marty handed out "Basie Straight Ahead" as a first read. I think I personally have played a variation of this chart, but can't recall it completely. Marty had us working at a slower pace on this music tonight, but we expect to play it much faster come the winter concert.
Ray then pulled out" Moose the Mooche" -- a Charlie Parker chart the AACC Jazz Band rehearsed during the summer session. There are many new faces appearing in the fall session, so many of the fall musicians were seeing "Moose" for the first time. After break, Marty had the band read through "Passin By", the we finished the evening performing "Tenderly"
As I said earlier, we had a huge showing tonight. Trumpet section was missing Scotty and Corey, but still had five trumpeters in the "back row." Trombones had seven performers, and there were 11 saxophones in the room (two baritones, three tenors and six altos). We also had a decent rhythm section showing with four pianists, four bassists, three guitarists and a pair of drummers.
I already mention that Corey wasn't at rehearsal, but Arundel ties were still there, with Marty (AHS 1981) leading a group that included Mitch, Joey and Sarah Wightman, Steve Barrett and Dave Gauvin.
Next rehearsal is Wednesday, September 16 at 7 p.m.

We have a vocalist!!
Her name is Fran and she attended her first rehearsal with "Marty and Ray's SuperSized Jazz Band" tonight to get a sample of our insanity, our music and the fun we have as a group.
Marty and Ray pulled out a trio of vocal charts that we performed during the first half of the session. We opened with the chart "Nice Work if You Can Get It" -- a Gershwin chart that we need to work on a bit. We also performed a vocal rendition of "Over the Rainbow" and finished the vocal work with "Orange Colored Sky" -- selection the band played a few years ago in concert.
We next pulled out "Meet the Flintstones" a jazzy version of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon theme song before break. Upon return, we had the class big band piece "Satin Doll" before closing with a read of "Fly Me to the Moon."
Once again, we had a big group -- this time the trumpets stood out as seven of us anchored the back row. We had eight saxophones (down three from last week), five trombones and a great selection of guitarists, bassists, pianists and drummers.
Because the air conditioning was off in Cade, Marty released us around 9 p.m. Next rehearsal is Wednesday, September 23 at 7 p.m.
Most of the previously listed musicians with Arundel ties were back in rehearsal tonight, with only Dave Gauvin missing the session. In addition to Marty, Mitch and Joey Wightman made up a third of the trombone section. Steve Barrett and Corey Grove were in the "back row" on trumpet, Sarah Wightman was with bari sax, and Nat Atnafu returned to the group to play bass.

Tonight was Charlie's night on the vocals circuit, as our resident singing trombonist got his chance to read through vocal charts with the band during tonight's rehearsal at Cade.
After we finished our traditional "The Count is In" warm up, Ray and Marty handed out a couple of "moon" charts that Charlie sang with the band. The first was a big band version of "Moondance" most familiar to me as a composition of Van Morrison fame. The second was entitled "Moonlight in Vermont" -- something I was not to familiar with, but it seemed to go well once we figured out the correct tempo. Both charts were left in the music folders, so they may find a spot in the program this December.
After the break, we tackled "Satin Doll," spend a bunch of time on "Tenderly," then concluded the evening working the pace to "Moose the Mooche" -- the Charlie Parker tune we've been working since the summer session.
A slightly smaller crowd of folks tonight, as we were missing a bunch of our "student" clientele from the band. We had a traditional group of four trumpets, six trombones and smaller contingent of saxophones than we usually have. Three pianists, four guitarist, and pair of bassists aided Marty, who was the only drummer to show up tonight.
As for the Arundel ties tonight...it was a small group with Marty, me, Mitch and Sarah Wightman and Dave Gauvin contributing to the effort tonight.
Next rehearsal is September 30, 7 p.m. at Cade.

Another good crowd tonight at Cade for AACC rehearsal...I arrived a little late (about 15 minutes) due to a work delay that didn't get me home until 6:40 p.m. I made the quick trip from Odenton to Arnold in about 20 minutes and luck with the lights.
Band opened as it usually opens with "The Count is In," which was followed by Fran singing "Over the Rainbow" -- one of two vocals rehearsed tonight. We then tackled "Avenue C", a chart I was reading for the first time tonight and one rehearsed until the first break at 8:15 p.m.
Upon our return, we went back into vocal mode so Fran could sightread "The Lady is a Tramp." We worked through the piece for a good part of the second half, then finished the evening by working "Moose the Mooche," concluding rehearsal around 9:30.
We added a new Arundel face to the ensemble tonight, as Lindsey Swenson (AHS Class of 2005) joined the ever-growing saxophone section. Lindsey's a clarinet player, but played tenor saxophone in Arundel's jazz band during her years at AHS. Corey Grove and Steve Barrett were two of the seven trumpet players at rehearsal tonight. Mitch and Joey Wightman, along with Dave Gauvin, comprised half the trombone section this evening, while band co-director Marty Knepp (drums) and Nat Atnafu shared duties in the rhythm section this evening.

Marty was missing tonight, but Ray Ascione had us working hard tonight as we tackled about six charts during our weekly rehearsal at Cade tonight.
As usual, we warmed up with "The Count is In" and followed that with "Moose the Mooche" to get us rolling. We then pulled up the "Over the Rainbow" and "Orange Colored Sky" that Fran, our female vocalist, will be singing with the band.
Following the vocals, Ray had us pull out "Lullaby of the Leaves" -- a chart we hadn't touched since the summer session and we closed the evening working "Impressions."
I plan to bring the digital camera in next week to get some photos of rehearsal and for AACC to use for marketing the jazz band. Some of the images shot next week will be on Facebook by weeks' end. Don't be camera shy...I'll try to shoot when I'm not playing the fourth part on trumpet.
Missing a couple of our Arundel regulars tonight, in addition to Marty Knepp. We did have Sarah Wightman on baritone sax, Lindsey Swenson on tenor, Joey Wightman and Dave Gauvin on trombone, Nat Atnafu on bass and myself on trumpet. Good turnout and a good rehearsal.

I was going to photograph rehearsal tonight for the AACC Jazz Band folders and get some new images for this semester, but I got out of work way too late tonight. By the time I got home, I had to inhale a cup of soup and a half a grilled cheese sandwich and hit the road, forgetting about the Nikon until after I hit Severna Park. I will bring the camera to rehearsal on the 21st, so be ready to ignore the Nikon while you play.
Another big crowd tonight, although the brass did dominate the rehearsal hall at Cade. Ray ended up playing lead alto because both Larry and Jesse were missing tonight. We did have four altos, a couple of tenors (short two) and one baritone sax. We had a full complement of trombones and trumpets and had plenty in the rhythm section to cover all the parts.
And we had Fran, who was able to sing through three charts tonight while also recording the session so she could practice with a recording of the band to assist. We worked "Orange Colored Sky," Over the Rainbow" and "Almost Like Being in Love" -- which the band got to see for the first time tonight.
In addition to the vocal charts tonight, the band went over "The Count is In" -- our standard warm-up piece -- then we closed the evening with "Moose the Mooche."
We may have up to eight more rehearsals before the concert on December 12 at Pascal Center. I do not know if there is a planned fall break this year at AACC and do not know if it will impact the rehearsal schedule. I'm sure he will let us know as soon as he knows.
The Arundel crew has been in-and-out of rehearsals in recent weeks. Tonight was no different as we were missing three of our regulars from the Wednesday session. Still, we were well represented by AHS alumni Marty Knepp, Mitch and Joey Wightman, Dave Gauvin, and Corey Grove, as well as Arundel band parent Steve Barrett. Hope to see more return next week.

Good crowd tonight, but short a bunch of our regulars. The Anne Arundel County Public Schools held their annual marching band exhibition tonight at Chesapeake High School. The exhibition took three of our musicians who were performing with their respective high schools (Arundel and Broadneck), but also took three additional alumni musicians providing logistical support to their high school's performances. As a result, tonight we were missing both baritone sax players, an alto saxohonist, a trombonist, a trumpeter and a bass player. There were other missing musicians as well, and Marty and Ray are in hopes of getting a full band back as we focus on the December 12 performance.
It was our male vocalist night tonight as we spent a majority of the session's second half working charts with Charlie Boyer. We performed "Moondance" and "Moonlight in Vermont" -- charts we've previously read with Charlie singing the lead. We also sight read "For Once in My Life."
As usual, we warmed up with "The Count is In," but followed that with "Lullaby of the Leaves," spending a good deal of time with sections. Marty then pulled out a chart entitled "Chelsea Bridge" -- a piece we read through a couple semesters back but haven't performed (at least not in the time I've been with the band). We also re-read through a Christmas Medley that is tentatively planned for the concert in December.
Given that there is probably not going to be a rehearsal on the day before Thanksgiving, we are looking at probably six more sessions before the concert. It could be less since one of the six remaining dates is slated for Veterans' Day (November 11). The need to rehearse during the final weeks is important for Marty and Ray to finalize the program and they ask you make all efforts to attend the remaining sessions -- including the dress rehearsal on December 9 at the Pascal Center.
As mentioned above, the AACPS exhibition took four of Arundel musicians away from rehearsal tonight. The school was represented tonight by AHS grads Marty, Mitch and Dave, plus Steve the AHS band parent. Hope to have the rest joining us at the next rehearsal.

We had nearly our full compliment of saxophone and rhythm section musicians tonight as most of our high school musicians returned to the AACC Community Jazz Band following their performance last week at the Anne Arundel County Public Schools marching band exhibition at Chesapeake High School.
However, we only had one regular drummer tonight and the trombone and trumpet section were short staffed this evening as half of each section was out of rehearsal. Granted, we still had four musicians in each brass section, but our numbers have fallen off from the seven and eight people in the trumpet and trombone section over the last couple of weeks.
Marty Knepp (AHS 1981) soloed as the jazz band director tonight, giving Andy all the drummer duties while we worked five charts this evening. Marty indicated that he and Ray Ascione (also absent tonight) narrowed down some of the options for what we'd be playing on December 12. I won't bother go list the charts because some of the directors' selections may change again as we finalize charts over the next five weeks.
We gave "The Count is In" a break this week, not using the chart as our traditional warm-up. Instead Marty did something a little different tonight, opening and spending a lot of time with "Satin Doll." During the opening session, the concentration was on this chart and "Avenue C," which we played at a variety of tempos before finishing the first session running the music at full tempo.
After the break, we pulled out "Impressions"and worked that work for a good portion of time - again, varying the tempo of the chart to allow the musicians to get a feel for the dynamics and tempo. We closed the evening with Charlie Boyer singing two of his potential charts -- "Moondance" and "For Once in My Life."
The AACC Jazz Band wishes to congratulate bassist Nathaniel Atnafu (AHS 2010) on his selection to both the Anne Arundel County "All-County Orchestra" and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's "Side-by-Side." Nat has been performing with AACC's Jazz Band for three years.
Joey Wightman (AHS 2005), Sarah Wightman (AHS 2009) and Nat all returned this week following their performance and support to the marching band exhibition last week. In addition to Marty and the trio, we also had trombonists Mitch Wightman (AHS 1975) and Dave Gauvin (AHS 1975) manning the lower brass section. Arundel band parent Steve Barrett also rehearsed.

Sorry I'm late with this...one of the few times I didn't file the update on the evening following rehearsal. I had two excuses: 1) spoke with daughter #2 on the phone when I got home and 2) YANKEES WIN!!! T-H-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A YANKEES WIN!
OK...enough editorializing. We had a great turnout of people Wednesday night with nearly every musician in attendance for what turned out to be a long and busy rehearsal. We were missing a few drummers, but the brass and woodwinds were well-represented.
With Marty stretching his corporate legs out in the Nevada desert, Ray Ascione put the musicians through a steady pace of performing...tweaking items as we went through and getting a variety of charts read as the countdown to December 12 approaches.
Ray's first bit of business was to narrow the list of music we may perform for the December show at Pascal. Although there may be some additional changes, this is the playlist for the show:
All the Things You Are Almost Like Being In Love Avenue C The Count Is In Cherokee For Once in My Life Impressions Lullaby of the Leaves (Meet) The Flintstones Moondance Moose the Mooche Orange Colored Sky Over the Rainbow Satin Doll Xmas Medley
Of the list above, we worked Wednesday on "The Count is In," "Meet the Flintstones," and "Impressions" during the first half. After the break, we concentrated on Fran's vocals, working on "Over the Rainbow, "Orange Colored Sky" and "Almost Like Being In Love." We finished up tonight close to 10 p.m.
Finally, although next Wednesday is Veterans' Day and a Federal Holiday, AACC is open for classes, and therefore, there is rehearsal at Cade on November 11 at our usual 7 p.m. start time. With November 25 (the day before Thanksgiving) likely to be part of the AACC Turkey Day break, we only have four more rehearsals before the winter concert -- including the slated December 9 dress rehearsal at Pascal.
The Arundel alumni crew Wednesday only had the had the Wightman trio at their respective positions (Joey actually brought in a tuba for a couple of charts). Current Arundel senior Nat Atnafu was on bass and I represented the Arundel band parents while slugging out my part on trumpet. Hopefully, we'll have the rest of the Arundel crew for the final few rehearsals.
See you all on Wednesday!!!

First of all -- Happy Veterans' Day to all of those who have served or are currently serving in our nation's military. There is a fairly good amount of military retirees and veterans in the AACC Community Jazz Band ranks and I'm hoping my military musical colleagues were able to enjoy and receive tributes and thanks for their loyal service to the country.
A wet night for the band and the weather conditions may have had an impact on the attendance tonight. We were missing half the saxophone section, a trombone and three trumpets. That left the wind instruments at 5, 5 and 5 -- a normal jazz band size. We also had two drummers, three pianists, four guitarists and a solo bass player tonight.
Both Ray and Marty commented tonight on how well the band "blended" tonight and prompted a conversation about having folks cut back to single performers on each part in order to enhance the sound and provide better balance. We may hear more about how we'll split parts from our section leaders, but that final decision will like come from Ray and Marty next week.
As for this week, the band worked on five charts, opening with (what else) "The Count is In." We then moved to "Satin Doll" and spent a good deal of time fine tuning that work. We then moved to "Tenderly," which will feature Scott Holbert on trumpet and worked both sides of our break refining background.
Next, we tackled "Almost Like Being in Love" -- which may or may not remain on the play list for the concert on December 12. We worked through one version tonight, then Marty pulled out a different arrangement of the same piece. After playing both versions, both Marty and Ray had us file the two versions in our folders -- a final decision may be made next week.
We closed the rehearsal with "Avenue C" -- a chart which Marty hopes to close the December concert. At this time, the charts for the show remain as:
All the Things You Are Almost Like Being In Love Avenue C The Count Is In Cherokee For Once in My Life Impressions Lullaby of the Leaves (Meet) The Flintstones Moondance Moose the Mooche Orange Colored Sky Over the Rainbow Satin Doll Xmas Medley
Finally, although there will be a rehearsal next Wednesday (November 18), the AACC campus will be closed on November 25 in observance of the Thanksgiving break. We have a December 2 rehearsal at Cade, then the full dress rehearsal at Pascal on December 9. Marty and Ray will also make a decision on concert attire between now and December 2 so we can play our wardrobe for the event.
Have a safe weekend and stay dry.

It was vocal night Wednesday night at the AACC Community Jazz Band rehearsal, as we spent a majority of the evening working on five vocal charts for Fran and Charlie.
It was also an evening we started with no bass player and Marty as the only drummer. One of our guitarists played the base line for "The Count is In," then when Wes and Zach arrived, Marty pulled that old three-string bass from the storage room and played until this fingers began to callous. Pete -- one of the seven trumpet players at rehearsal tonight -- finished the evening on bass.
With the exception of the bass players, we had a good sized crowd tonight -- especially in the trumpet and sax sections. We had a trombone foursome (with a tuba to boot), and had our normal piano and guitar group in attendance.
After we warmed up with "The Count is In, we worked extensively with "Lullaby of the Leaves." We then moved to the first of Fran's numbers - "Orange Colored Sky," rehearsing that up to our 8:30 p.m. After the break, we continued with "Over the Rainbow," then finished Fran's evening with "Almost Like Being in Love."
Charlie took over at that time to rehearse his two numbers for the December 12 concert -- "Moondance" and "For Once in My Life." Before we knew it, it was 9:45 p.m.
There is no rehearsal next week, as AACC is closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday. That only leaves two additional rehearsals before the show -- one at Cade on December 2 and the dress rehearsal at Pascal on December 9.
We have added one more number to the set list...We are playing the National Anthem to open the show...it's the same music we used last semester.
Finally, Marty set the attire requirements for the show -- ALL BLACK and no ties. Musicians were given the option of a holiday festive hat if they choose to wear it.
Missing three of our normal Arundel crew tonight, but we still had our fair share of musicians representing the school. In addition to Marty on drums, we Mitch and Joey Wightman on trombone (Joey brought the tuba as well), while Arundel grad Corey Grove and Arundel band parent Steve Barrett were in the trumpet section.
Have a happy Thanksgiving and hope to see all on December 2 at Cade.
